No matter what you have achieved, you are certainly aware of others who have achieved more. No matter how famous you have become, you know of others who are more famous than you. No matter how strong you are, you know others who are stronger than you.
No matter how beautiful you are, you know others who are more beautiful than you. No matter how intelligent you may be, you know of others who outdo you with their intelligence. No matter how eloquent you may be, you are surely aware of those who are more eloquent than you.
You are limited in every way as you are but a human, and despite your limited knowledge of this vast world, you are aware of many who are greater than you in many ways. What if you were granted knowledge of all those who you are unaware of? How many others who are far greater than yourself do you think you will discover? The answer of course is: Many!
All of this is to remind you that you are not entitled to greatness. The Prophet ﷺ said,
من تَعَظَّمَ في نفسِه أو اختال في مِشيَتِه لقي اللهَ وهو عليه غضبانٌ
❝Whoever feels an internal entitlement to greatness, or arrogantly walks around, when he meets Allah, He will be angry with him.❞ [Musnad Ahmad] This is because true entitlement of greatness is for Allah alone.
The only thing that can make a human being great is his recognition, acceptance, and internalization of the reality that true and absolute greatness solely belongs to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah said,
العز إزاري والكبرياء ردائي، فمن ينازعني في واحد منهما فقد عذبته
❝Might is My lower garment and pride is My cloak. If anyone attempts to contend me in either of those two, I will surely punish him.❞ [Sahih Muslim]
