ʿĀshūrā is a key to increasing rizq for the rest of the year. Give your family presents, money, and take them out for dinner. Keep in mind that ʿĀshūrā starts at maghrib the night before (on the ninth day of Muharram) and finishes at maghrib on the 10th day of Muharram. If you plan on going out for dinner then it needs to be the night before, because you will be fasting on the day of ʿĀshūrā.
The Messenger ﷺ said, ❝Whoever increases his spending upon his family on the day of ʿĀshūrā, Allah eases his life for the rest of the year.❞ [Shuʿab al-Īmān, Al-Bayhaqī]
Sufyān Ibn ʿUyainah would say, ❝We have tried for 50 or 60 years and we only found it to be good.❞ Jābir (ra) said, ❝We tried and found that it works.❞ Shuʿbah also said the same.
– These words have been reported from the Prophet ﷺ and authenticated by al-Suyūṭī. Likewise, al-Kurdī graded the tradition ḥasan in al-Ḥawāshī al-Madaniyyah, al-Bayhaqī strengthened this tradition considering the multiplicity of chains, al-Ḥaskafī authenticated it in al-Durr al-Mukhtār, and Ibn ʿAbidīn in Radd al-Muḥtār. These words are also reported from many of the Salaf including ʿUmar (ra) authentically.
It should be noted that although there is a difference of opinion about the authenticity of the chains of the hadith at hand, in practice, all four Sunni schools of thought are in agreement that generosity and increased spending on the family on the day of ʿĀshūrā is an encouraged practice.
